Most kitchens we see sit in detached houses from the sixties and seventies fill. Plenty of those homes also run a rainwater tank, which is why filter questions come up so often.

Where Each Type of Filter Connects

The four set-ups join the plumbing in four places: the cold pipe in the cupboard, the bench beside the sink, the main supply, and the line to the fridge.

  1. Under the sink

An under-sink water filter lives in the sink cupboard, drawing from the cold supply and sending water out through a separate small tap or the kitchen mixer. Hidden away, the unit suits the compact benches of a sixties kitchen.

  2. On the bench

A benchtop filter stands on the bench rather than inside the cupboard, so no storage is lost and the connection work stays light.

  3. At the main

A whole-house water filter mounts on the main supply pipe before the pipe branches out to the fixtures. Every tap and appliance downstream then draws water through the unit, and the housing is picked for the flow the house draws.

  4. Behind the fridge

A fridge water line runs cold water from the supply to the dispenser or ice maker, and a filter can go on that line. If the whole bench is being rebuilt, our kitchen sink installation guide covers the waste side, and dishwasher installation handles the appliance beside it.

Why Filter Installation Quotes Differ

Five things move the price: the unit type, access at the connection point, whether a tap gets added, any pipework changes, and the ongoing cartridge swaps. You get a fixed quote before any work starts, so the number is settled early.

A few things push a quote up in older homes:

  • tight access in a cupboard fitted decades before filters existed
  • a new dedicated tap drilled into a bench that's staying
  • pipework changes where the cold supply runs an odd route
  • a whole-house unit needing room found on the incoming main

Cartridges are a running cost as well. Brisbane City Council's rainwater tank advice includes replacing filter cartridges strictly per the manufacturer's instructions, so budget for the swaps from the start.

Who May Fit a Water Filter in Queensland

Yes, a home owner may swap a domestic water filter cartridge, because the QBCC treats that job as unregulated work, provided the result still meets the minimum standards. Hooking a new filter up to the supply is a different category, and a licensed plumber carries the work out.

That split matters more than it looks:

  1. Cartridge swap

unregulated, so no licence, no QBCC approval and no report, provided the work meets the standards.

  2. New connection

regulated work, carried out by a QBCC licensee.

  3. Product rules

WaterMark certification, the trademark and a database listing come before installation.

WaterMark shows the product complies with the plumbing code, suits its purpose and meets the Australian Standards covering quality, health and safety. The scheme says nothing about what a filter removes, and neither do we.

What Renters and Tank Water Homes Check First

Two checks come first: a renter needs written approval from the owner or manager before attaching a fixture, and tank water homes should check the drinking guidance.

On the rental side, the paperwork comes before the plumber. A tenant lodges Form 23 with the owner or property manager and gets the yes in writing before anything is attached to the pipes. A request like a benchtop filter should not be unreasonably refused.

On the tank side, the official advice is plain. Queensland's home owner guide allows rainwater for drinking, hygiene and food preparation only when no town supply exists, because a reticulated supply is the safer bet for drinking. Brisbane City Council goes further still.

Council's position is not to use stored tank water for the kettle or the cookpot, because its quality varies greatly. We make no claim that a filter changes either position.

  2. 2

    We scope the connection point

We check where the unit will live, from a slim cupboard near St Peter Chanel Primary School to a house main on a bush-edge block, confirm the WaterMark details, and quote from what we find.

  3. 3

    Sign off the quote

You'll see a fixed quote before any work starts, with flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees. The job starts when you're happy with it.

  4. 4

Filter Questions The Gap Locals Ask

Call (07) 3524 7137

What types of water filter can be installed in The Gap homes?

Four set-ups cover the choices: under-sink in the cupboard, benchtop beside the sink, whole-house on the incoming main, and a filter on the fridge line. We connect whichever suits your kitchen.

What are the disadvantages of a whole-house water filter?

The whole flow passes through one housing, so the unit takes room on the supply run and the housing is sized to the flow the house draws. Cartridges need replacing, and once one clogs, every tap runs slower.

Can a tenant in The Gap install a water filter?

No, not without approval first. A renter lodges Form 23 with the owner or property manager and gets the yes in writing before anything is attached to the pipes. The request should not be unreasonably refused.

Does a water filter need WaterMark certification?

Yes, in most cases. Most plumbing products need the WaterMark trademark and a listing on the product database, and certification must be in place before we can fit the unit.

Will a filter make tank water safe to drink?

No, and we won't claim otherwise. Queensland's guidance treats rainwater as a drinking option only when no town supply exists, and Council's advice is not to use stored tank water for the kettle or the cookpot, because its quality varies.
